Sitting up here in Denver Co on a frigid (-6 !) day, and reading your essay. Please talk about the many scents of your walk next time. Denver and Colorado as a whole are so dry! The first thing I love about FL when I step off the plane to visit my birthplace are the overwhelming and varied Floridian scents and smells! The experience stirs me to my soul!! Dreaming of my Anna Maria vacation!!

Love the doors. Painted mine red years ago .reminds me , in a small way of the doors in Dublin..

so much of your walk is what I see when I turn off 301 at Fruitville and meander through side streets...the light and boat house always a favorite, likewise the brightly painted bungalows and gardens. The children’s garden, where I took my grands when they spent summers with us. Many fond memories of things no longer...the old library, turned Science museum, now torn down for new future plans on the bay.

Never be afraid to go off the beaten path...some of the most interesting things are there to be explored.

Thanks again for allowing me to tag along, unobserved..🌻

Your strolls remind me of my visits to my old home in NYC. One can just pick any area and walk around and see amazing things—- their own versions of quirky buildings, lots of historical stuff——nature!!!—I am all for the stroll!!

Yes, yes, yes to color. Which is why my house was lavender with a front door painted "Million Dollar Red". I had hoped that it would attract money in thru the front door. In the end it did, as we reaped $100K profit when we sold the house. However, the people who bought it re-painted it charcoal grey - very depressing looking house to me.

I really get your idea of "ambling" about with no direction and nobody with you. I loved doing that on Lido when I used to go to the beach. Now I'm more apt to do it in the car and just let it go where it takes me. Even "wrong" turns end up in fascinating places - like heading to Black Mountain, NC and ending up at Lake Lure. Nothing "wrong" about that turn. Whenever we got "lost", I would say to Mike, don't worry; it will be an adventure.

Serendipity - such a wonderful word!! A couple of weeks ago, I headed down the road to Pinecraft Park on a whim and came across a herd of wood storks!! Life is like jazz; you gotta swing; you gotta improvise; and there are no wrong notes.

You made my walks feel so pedestrian, Carrie. Reminded me of a great song, Walk On By, by Dionne Warwick. I just walk to a local park and back, using it as a time to let my iPOD take me back to more colorful times. I hope your sense of smell returns. I can’t imagine losing it. Just had my first COVID vaccination thanks to my daughter’s persistence and it went well. Have to stay away from people still since few wear masks here. Inconvenient evidently.

You can “borrow” our twins any time for a Children's Garden adventure! We used to take them there often when they were 2-3 years old! Fun times!!

Wonderful post. I love your kind of walks and do them often - especially in strange cities. I call them dérives ... and tried to get students to do those kinds of walks when I was teaching.

Neat neighborhood. There is a great Cafe on 10th between Orange and Osprey. Maximilian . Pressed veggie sandwich is great. Always loved the boat house.

What a beautiful post and it reminds me of Denver. I love taking strolls like you and it is so easy to wander around in Denver and see such wonderful sights. In our neighborhood we are trying to battle density building which is destroying the beautiful old homes. These super McModern Mansions fill up the entire property and become behemoths next to the old houses that created the character of the neighborhoods. It is a depressing "progress" that I hate to see. False progress, actually, this super sizing of homes is silly considering that in the near future natural resources are going to be scarce. Air conditioning, heating, etc., with rolling black outs becoming a norm, I don't see how these new houses are sustainable.
