Psychiatry seems to be caught up in the same sort of system as the rest of the medical industry. "We have our protocols, and we don't stray from those." In history, it seem it is always those who think outside the box who make the greatest strides, no matter what the arena.

I would wonder too, if alternative treatments like sound & music therapy, reiki, diet, etc. would have an effect as adjunct therapy. Years ago I worked with a dog who had a very severe behavior problem and used Reiki on him. Other than his owners, I was the only one he would allow around him without having a fit and biting them if they came into the house.

Yes, as you well know, music has been Keaton's "therapy" all along. Unfortunately, the medical industry's ties to the pharmaceutical industry will likely continue to hamper more holistic treatments.

Wonderful book I just re-read called "Waking the Spirit" by Andrew Schulman. He is a guitarist from NYC - played a lot of big venues like Carnegie Hall. Went into the hospital for surgery which put him in a coma. He had recorded music for himself to listen to during recovery. After a few weeks of not coming out of the coma, his wife convinced the doc to let her play him the music. He came out of the coma the next day. He went to develop a music therapy program with Beth Israel where (and other musicians) would go in to the recovery ICU and play for these people in deep comas. It works. The music that brings the most response? Bach and the Beatles!!

There are so many supportive therapies out there to help us all, one way or another, that get ignored by the medical industry. They don't seem to be able to think outside the box a lot of times, and of course, it doesn't make them any money. No insurance benefits for listening to music!! And I don't think pharma has a stake in the music business!! :-)
