Okay I'm biased but I think a column written by someone with your expertise, thoughtfulness and determination is going to gather steam and help inspire a national conversation. I'm with you all the way, go for it! Sarah

I salute your decision to no longer write as a city side columnist and to write less frequently. This will give you a shot at being a national voice about a subject that, God knows, needs attention and discussion. With your newspaper chops and your family experience, I know “FACEing Mental Illness” will be an important part of a much needed national discussion.

I will miss the type of articles about Sarasota that you have written, but I’m very happy that you will be taking on a topic that you are passionate about. I look forward to reading your future articles on mental illness.

Carrie, I too, have a child with serious mental illness -borderline personality disorder. She was an awful teen and early 20s but around 30 got stable and did well until she had a complete breakdown. It was years of watching her self destruct, which left a grandchild deserted at 16. I get it. I look forward to reading posts about your new direction, and I applaud the support that everyone needs.

I think we all feel this way often. For me, it helps just to reach out to another with a phone call, a note, or a small box of home-made cookies. I also pray specifically for people who ask or whose needs I know. Do what you can, whenever you can.

You can't go wrong with following your inner nudge! Especially since human mental health is the most important issue next to the environment. We must find a sustainable solution in both realms, otherwise we are doomed. Go for it Carrie, I am rooting for you!

Carrie good for you. Dealing with DNA/chemical imbalances combined with environmental influences is a tough nut, but helped if not solved, by someone of your caliber. Best of luck.
